Punishment was decided by the lord of the manor. In simple terms, the person who owned the land were the crime was committed or landlord. There wasn't a court like today. Also the king would also give punishment to the wrongdoers on his land. It is also said that Saints and Bishops could give punishments as well. This could explain the ordeals and compurgations. The ordeals were interesting ways back then. The ordeals included a type of torture which would result in a message from God to see if a man/woman was guilty or not. There were three ordeals: water, fire, and combat. One story of a man who did the ordeal of fire. He held a bar that was extremely hot and it resulted in an infection. This was seen as a sign from God of this man being guilty. His hand was then badly hurt as punishment.
